Riddle me this, "what moves faster than the speed of light?" 

Times up, the answer is social media. Every minute or even second, things are changing, algorithms are getting "smarter" or more annoying depending on how you look at it. Marketers, brands, and influencers, alike are tasked with, the almost impossible task, of staying up-to-date with everything.

Having now done this for several years there are things you begin to see. Notice really. Call it being a "seasoned vet," but these mini hacks have helped me stay current and in some rare instances, get ahead of the trends.

Below, I've shared 36 of my tried and true tips for how to get ahead in a world that is already far more social than we give it credit for.

  1. Using filters and editing your photos before uploading them to Instagram will increase your engagement rate.
  2. Need content for your social media channels? Use UGC (user generated content) a.k.a. content that your customers are already posting online about your brand.
  3. Want to boost your Instagram engagement and following? Create Instagram guidelines and a mood board to reference to create a specific aesthetic.
  4. Sometimes taking things step by step is easier and more manageable. When it comes to social media, set a day to schedule posts and then everyday spend time live posting and engaging this will take away some of that stress you may be experiencing.
  5. Planning your content in advance will make your life easier, more cohesive, and will save time.
  6. Don’t forget to keep your profile information up to date. Even be sure to advertise your latest event or blog post there!
  7. Have a post that is performing well on Facebook or Instagram? Boost it with a paid ad to receive more engagement.
  8. When posting to social media, review your analytics, and adjust posts accordingly to improve your results.
  9. Social media is a two-way marketing platform for your business. That means you need to speak in conversational tone to get that conversation between you and your customers started.
  10. Facebook Page Favorites: you can mark other brand pages as favorites on your business’ page. This is a helpful way to promote partners, good causes, or others you’re connecting your business with.
  11. When on Twitter, the ideal character count is 100. This gives users a better opportunity to comment when re-tweeting.
  12. Start noticing what posts you gain and lose followers from. This will help you better understand your audience and better plan your content.
  13. If users are tagging your business in their photos, engage with them. If they are of good quality, repost them!
  14. When posting to Snapchat or Instagram Stories, make sure to share the entire story with your followers, from beginning to end.
  15. Every business needs to use and create a custom hashtag. This not only promotes your business in a different way, but encourages people to use and post with your hashtag.
  16. Make sure to keep profile and cover photos consistent across social media channels.
  17. Be sure to utilize Twitter lists to help organize followers and users on your Twitter account.
  18. When creating paid ads, make sure to target the right audience with the right content.
  19. Add value to the conversation by sharing content that will make your customers lives easier.
  20. For Instagram and Twitter, analyze when people are unfollowing you. This will help you create content.
  21. Are you sharing behind the scenes (#BTS) content? People engage with authentic content and like to see the process.
  22. Create a plan for each social channel. The same content and tone doesn’t work for every channel.
  23. Build a list (or separate account) of brands and businesses you admire on Instagram to gain inspiration from and to learn from.
  24. Holiday coming up? Take advantage of the time and create a campaign around it that makes sense to your business.
  25. Optimize visual content with links. Visual content can act as a “gateway” to more valuable content. When planning visual content to post on social platforms, think in terms of how it can drive traffic back to your site.
  26. Create a plan for each social channel. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So many businesses make the mistake of blindly jumping into social media marketing without a social media strategy in place. If you can’t answer questions like “What social media platform features your target audience?” Then it is time to hit the reset button.
  27. Use social media monitoring to track your company’s social media presence. This will enable you to make sure customer activity is not unanswered, that your social media communities are staying on brand, and that any negative postings receive measured, prompted responses.
  28. When designing Pinterest graphics, be sure to let your readers know what’s in it for them by adding text to the image.
  29. Ratings and reviews are highly prized by millennials on social media. Be sure to ask your customers to rate you on Facebook.
  30. Use your paid social ads to see who (demographically)is responding to your content, then optimize.
  31. When on Twitter remember the 80/20 rule. Post 80% of your own content, and 20% of relevant re-tweets.
  32. Facebook is a people driven platform. Let your audience know there’s a person behind by having the Page editor use a personal tone.
  33. When it comes to figuring out what to share on social media, quality beats quantity. You want to publish content consistently, but it also has to be valuable.
  34. Upload videos directly to Facebook instead of linking to another site. This way is proven to gain more engagement.
  35. It is important to show your relevance to your customers. Be involved in appropriate trending hashtags and live tweeting events, such as TV show premieres.
  36. To make the most of your limited resources, find the one social media channel that fits your business best and kill it!
